At Retreat 21, we’ve seen Friday weddings that look every bit as elegant and formal as a Saturday celebration, and Saturday weddings that turn into an entire weekend of gathering, celebrating and relaxing with loved ones. The truth is, there’s no universally better wedding day. The right choice depends on your budget, guest list and the kind of wedding weekend experience you want to create.

If you’re about to start touring wedding venues and are trying to decide between a Friday and Saturday date, here are a few things to consider.

Friday vs. Saturday Wedding at a Glance

So, which is right for you? Let’s break down the biggest differences.

Why Choose a Friday Wedding?

1. Save on your venue and put your budget elsewhere

The biggest advantage of a Friday wedding is often the cost savings.

At Retreat 21, and almost any other venue you’ll come across, Friday venue rental is lower than Saturday, which can give you more room in your overall wedding budget for the things that matter most to you, whether that’s your band, florals, transportation, photography or guest experiences. And a lower venue cost doesn’t have to mean a less impressive wedding.

It can mean spending your budget differently.

A recent Friday wedding at Retreat 21 offered a great example of the financial advantages of selecting a Friday date. As the mother of the bride noted on The Knot:

“Our guests were blown away by the facility, the flow of the events and all the offerings we were able to provide, like the late night bites, the outdoor fire pit, swings, games and more. We held a Friday wedding to fit better into our budget which was very reasonable.” – Mother of the Bride

Choosing Friday doesn’t mean you have to compromise on the experience.

2. You may have more flexibility with your date

Saturdays are traditionally the most sought-after wedding dates, particularly during peak wedding season. Choosing Friday can give you more options if you’re set on a particular season or venue. It can also make it easier to build a full weekend around your wedding.

A Friday wedding leaves Saturday and Sunday open for brunches, casual gatherings, time with family and friends, or simply enjoying the whole weekend together.

3. Friday can still feel completely formal

Don’t assume a Friday wedding means a casual celebration. A recent Retreat 21 couple chose a Friday date and had an elegant, incredibly formal celebration with an all-black dress code.

The day of the week doesn’t determine the feel of your wedding. Your vision does.

Another Friday couple had an offsite late-afternoon ceremony followed by a celebration at Retreat 21, with a band, upgraded transportation and plenty of thoughtful details throughout the day. This is a great example of how a Friday date can leave more room in the budget for the parts of the celebration that matter most to you.

4. The biggest Friday consideration: your guests

The tradeoff is that some guests may need to take time off work, especially if you’re planning an earlier ceremony or have a large number of out-of-town guests.

When considering Friday, think about your VIP guests first. Are most of them local? Do they have flexible schedules? Would a later ceremony make attendance easier?

Friday weddings can absolutely work for guests, but it’s worth thinking through before choosing your date.

Why Choose a Saturday Wedding?

1. More time for setup and complex wedding plans

One of the biggest advantages of Saturday at Retreat 21 is the additional flexibility it provides for setup. Saturday wedding access begins at 9 a.m., giving couples and vendors more time to transform the space before guests arrive. That’s especially helpful if you’re planning elaborate installations, bringing in additional rentals or coordinating several moving pieces.

We’ve seen this make a real difference for couples with more complicated wedding-day details. A recent Retreat 21 Saturday couple incorporated an offsite ceremony, a dance floor and offsite chairs that all needed to be coordinated and delivered. Having the full day allowed plenty of time for everything to come together.

Other Saturday couples have used the additional setup time for extensive décor installations and more involved transformations of the venue.

If your wedding requires a lot of setup, ask yourself how much time your vendors realistically need.

That answer may point you toward Saturday.

2. Easier for most guests

For most guests, Saturday is simply the easiest day to attend. There’s no need to take a weekday off work or adjust school schedules, and out-of-town guests have more flexibility to travel.

If having the easiest possible schedule for your guest list is a priority, Saturday may be worth the additional investment.

3. Priority access to onsite lodging

This is another important Retreat 21-specific difference.

Saturday wedding couples receive priority access to onsite cabins from the time they sign until six months before their wedding date. Friday couples may still have the opportunity to reserve cabins, but availability is not guaranteed. It all depends on what the Saturday wedding does or does not reserve.

If having your wedding party and closest friends and family stay onsite is an important part of your wedding weekend, this can be a major consideration.

One September 2025 Saturday wedding couple shared

“The only venue we ever toured, because R21 truly had everything we needed! From our rehearsal dinner onsite at the Taphouse to booking all onsite accommodations for our bridal party, we truly had a wonderful wedding weekend.” – 2025 Retreat 21 Wedding Couple

4. A built-in Friday rehearsal dinner

A Saturday wedding also gives you the opportunity to gather everyone for a Friday rehearsal dinner without asking guests to take another weekday off.

At Retreat 21, couples can host their rehearsal dinner onsite at the Taphouse, making it easy to start celebrating before the wedding day even begins. And even with a Friday wedding, you still have the opportunity to gather your loved ones for a Thursday rehearsal dinner. It may just mean asking guests to shift their Thursday schedules a bit!

Should You Choose Friday or Saturday?

Instead of asking which day is better, think about which priorities matter most to you.

Friday may be right for you if:

  • You want to spend less on your venue
  • You’d rather put more of your budget toward other vendors or guest experiences
  • You like the idea of extending the celebration through Saturday and Sunday
  • You have flexibility around venue setup

Saturday may be right for you if:

  • You want the easiest schedule for most guests
  • You have an elaborate setup or lots of vendor logistics
  • You want priority access to onsite lodging
  • You’re looking for a traditional wedding weekend
  • You’re comfortable investing more in the venue

And remember: you don’t have to decide based on the calendar alone. Think about the entire experience you’re trying to create.

Where will your bridal party stay? How much setup time will your vendors need? What matters most to your guests? Would you rather save on the venue or invest in additional wedding-day details?

Those answers will tell you much more than the words “Friday” or “Saturday.”

Friday vs. Saturday Wedding FAQs

Is a Friday wedding cheaper than a Saturday wedding?

Typically, yes, although pricing varies by venue, season and date. At Retreat 21, Friday venue rental is lower than Saturday, which can give couples more flexibility in how they allocate their overall wedding budget. For current pricing, contact our team.

Is a Friday wedding harder for guests to attend?

It can be for some guests because they may need to take time off work. A later ceremony can make a Friday wedding easier for guests with traditional work schedules.

What are the Saturday wedding advantages at Retreat 21?

Saturday weddings provide more setup flexibility with 9am venue access and priority access to onsite cabins. This can be especially valuable for couples planning extensive or complex installations or wanting their loved ones to stay onsite.

Which is better, a Friday or Saturday wedding?

Neither is automatically better. Friday may be the better choice for couples prioritizing venue savings and a longer celebration weekend, while Saturday may be better for couples prioritizing guest convenience, setup time and onsite lodging.
